Sputtering? Airflow Issue and how to reduce it

Submitted by electronguru - 6/27/2020

The world needs a ductless split in a box. The Quiet Temp series comes as close as I™€™ve seen to this standard: Efficient operation Quiet operation Hands off operation (set it and forget it) Adjustable compressor power Cooling + heatpump modesBut before they can get to 4 and 5, Frigidaire engineers need to solve an air flow issue that is reducing the performance of #2 on these models. Under specific conditions, air flow gets to low relative to temperature, moisture builds up on the cooling fins - and the restricted air struggling to move through the saturated coils - starts making the sputtering? sound reported in so many reviews. To confirm this sound is your sound, put your hand over the outgoing air. If you feel the air flow sputtering like a WWI aircraft running out of gas? and its in concert with the sound (gush gush gush gush), this is why! Here is each contributing factor and how to reduce them:Air speed - the slower air is flowing, the more likely moisture is to accumulate on the coils. Low speed is to slow when combined with other factors. Use medium speed whenever possible. Also affecting airflow is fan mode and filter. Eco fan mode reduces the time the fan spends removing moisture, accelerating moisture accumulation. Use either cool (continuous blow) mode or medium speed modes, never use low and eco at the same time. Dirty filters slow air speed even more, so clean your filter at least twice as often as the orange light indicates. Or just check the filter for material when the sputtering gets worse.Air volume - the smaller the room you are cooling, the more often a given portion of air goes through the machine and the more likely it is to deposit moisture on the coils. This may be because its colder going in. Open doors next to the room being cooled to increase air volume.Temperature - the colder you set the unit to achieve, the colder the intake air will get and the faster moisture will accumulate on the coils. If 64 degrees works for your needs, don™€™t set it on 60 or even 62.Compressor power - the higher the BTU rating, the larger the compressor the colder the coils and the faster the air is cooled. But this also increases how much cold the fans have to contend with, depositing moisture faster onto the coils. This I believe is why there are fewer complaints about the 6000 vs the 8000. Get as little BTU as you can get away with. If there was an auto mode that dropped power while approaching temperature (8000 60000 40000 2000 btu), this issue would likely evaporate as fast as the water causing this issue. Fin spacing - you can™€™t do anything about this but its useful to know. The constant drive to increase efficiency also means making the fins thinner and closer together. A major reason this unit makes so much cold for so little watts is this design choice. But putting fins closer together also increases surface tension with water, increasing water stickiness and slowing waters ability to drain.Worse practices, how to reproduce the issue: speed low, 60F (and actually get air under 65), eco mode, small sealed space, 8000 BTUBest practices, reducing the issue:: medium fan speed, higher set temperature, cool mode, 6000 BTU, larger room. You don™€™t necessary need all these, but the more you use together, the fewer times you™€™ll have issues. Start with your least important priorities and go from there.Additional tips:A quick way to solve this when it happens is to switch to fan mode, M or H speed and let air blow through with the compressor off. Once air returns to normal flow (no sputtering), the coils are warmer and dryer and you are ready to try again with better settings.Start running the unit an hour or two early. This both stabilizes the air and allows you to do things like running a higher fan speed when you're not in the room. Then if its been cycling a while when you are ready for bed, you can get away with settings, like low fan speed. Don™€™t describe this issue to Frigidaire as a sound. This machine makes many different noises and most are normal. Instead, put your forearm across the out air vent at the top and feel what the air itself is doing. Then describe the pulsing of the air, how it changes second to second and even side to side. How different this is to when air is flowing normally. This is not normal and has one cause: the coils clogging up with ice and/or water vapor.

problems

Submitted by sandra solomon - 8/18/2019

I have 2 frigidaire air conditioners - the 6,000 btu is great - the 8,000 has problems. At intervals it is very noisy, when I went to clean the filter, some of the fins were bent. It also does not keep the temp. correctly. I set it at 77 econo and auto fan - did not go on - temp in room was 81, did not go on until I set it on 74.

After replacement still the same problem!

Submitted by farlen - 8/9/2019

I first bought this unit in July of 2018, then after two months of use this loud inconsistent whisping sound started to come around. After about a week, it was intolerable and I contacted frigidaire. They replaced the unit and I didnt use it until the second half of this summer 2019. After one month of using the replacement unit the exact same thing started happening! It is so loud and inconsistent of a sound, it is unbearable. I have contacted frigidaire again and they will replace it but I have to cut the chord on my current unit before initiating the replacement process which can take up to 10 days. In the middle of summer that is not possible for us. I am seeking a refund but no one seems to be able to answer that for me. I contacted a corporate supervisor based in georgia and she absolutely useless. She outright accused me of returning this unit every season. What would the point of a replacement be if this problem keeps happening! I am astounded at the lack of professionalism and customer satisfaction. I have attached a video with the sound. The sound happens whether the air compressor is on or off. It is impossible to sleep through this! This is the replacement they sent me and still the SAME problem! I WANT A REFUND!

HORRIBLE BUZZ!!!! FGRQ0833u1

Submitted by masdfdsafdsf - 7/26/2019

Something is wrong with the compressor - my friend has one. After a month he got a terrible buzz too! All models FGRQo833u1 are not good, They discontinued it but took our money knowing it's junk!! I tried taping the belt that comes out of back to the side, that worked for a while. Simple fix - but doesn't last. NOT quiet if it buzzes loudly. Cust. service knows this about the buzz/compressor I just talked to them! Made me 2star on revewi.

Really Quiet!

Submitted by Yorkie1 - 6/16/2019

I have had this air conditioner for about a month and used it a few times. It is really quiet; sometimes I walk over to the window where the air conditioner is placed to see if it is still on. In order to keep my room on the cooler side I lower the temp to 68 degrees. Next year I will purchase another one to put in another room because it's quieter than most.

Very Quiet

Submitted by BostonChris - 6/12/2019

This AC unit was installed in my office last year (2018). It's great. Cools very quickly and is very quiet. I can be sitting right next to it and still have a professional, normal decibel level conversation on the phone (no need to turn it off to hear and be heard). It was left in the window all year and it turned on today (June 2019) without issue. I live in Boston so we get extreme weather (hot humid summers and bitterly cold snowy winters) and it held up great. I like it so much I want to get one for my bedroom at home. Most reviews are after only a few weeks of use but I wanted to give a long term use review hoping it will help others make a decision. Design wise I think it is one of the most attractive options for a window unit out there.

Underwhelming

Submitted by kristy77a - 6/4/2019

1) Is quiet on lower settings but real-world/normal use isn't any more quiet than competition. 2) There's an annoying plastic rattle in front just below the controls; goes away if I press on the plastic. This is a design issue. 3) Remote control nowhere to be found. I combed through the packaging. Apparently not included. 4) I tried to call regarding the missing remote but customer service toll-free phone line (1-800-374-4432) is worthless: Only gets you a recording directing you to use less costly on-line customer support. I can live with above problems 1, 2 and 3 but #4, poor customer support is, for me, a killer. A product is only as good as how it's backed up.

whooshing sound keeps us up at night!

Submitted by sleepdeprivedandhot - 5/29/2019

whooshing sound keeps us up at night! We bought this window unit specifically to keep our bedroom cool at night during the humid East Coast summers... When the unit first starts, it's quiet and cool. Unfortunately, there is an incredibly annoying and constant "whooshing"/"whistling" sound that has been posted on YT by another owner. This happens irrespective of AC mode and temperature setting. We have been trying to exchange this unit, but with lack of response we are going to ask for a full refund.

Submitted by Chicka - 3/11/2019

I bought this AC for my bedroom in 2017 because of the quiet and it was awesome! Kept my Bedroom very cold with low humidity which is what we need because I™€™m on the second floor of an apartment of an old house that gets very humid in the summer time. still very quiet but the next summer in 2018, it Didn™€™t work as well keeping the bedroom cold and keeping the humidity at bay. I had to keep turning the temperature down. I didn™€™t buy a warrantee when I bought this item at Lowe™€™s because I™€™ve never had an issue with ACs before they usually last about 10 years!! Very bummed about this AC. Loved the quiet don™€™t love the one season. Not worth the money.

Very quiet - when chatter isn't present.

Submitted by rks838 - 10/16/2018

I bought this a month ago. For cooling, it's effective. Regarding noise: at its best, its very impressively quiet. It's usually this quiet. However, it sometimes produces a chatter, which is precisely what I paid over $100 extra to avoid. That's extremely frustrating given that it appeared barely 1 week after I began using the product. The unit's styrofoam interior pieces are also already getting moldy, as is predictable in any humid climate. The next manufacturer to produce quiet window unit with an anti-mold design (or easy ability to disassemble the unit and clean the mold) can have my $600.

Got this air conditioner due to ratings that said it was quiet. I am very pleased with the ac; quiet and has a remote to turn off at night or at your option. Only thing that bothers me is that when set to eco setting, it turns off, makes a slight noise, and noise again when it starts up. Other than that, it is quiet and keeps me cool.

Submitted by Alexvlack - 10/16/2018

This is indeed quiet, but sadly has lost power over the summer. It just isn't as cool as it was at the beginning. It also stops and starts throughout the nigh in "high" mode. I asked for a replacement under warranty, so we'll see if that works. Which, by the way, is a pain: you have to send a picture of the old unit with the CORD CUT in order to receive the new one, which means you have to go without air conditioning while you wait.

Quiet and then not

Submitted by Vida - 10/15/2018

Ran very quiet during the first week - so excited and happy. Then starting hearing some low gurgling and whooshing sounds that weren't there before. I tolerate it because it's still fairly quiet to operate but am annoyed by the sounds just the same. Wondering if I should call service? The remote is terrible. I have to push the buttons many times to engage a command. It cools my 15' x 15' room, but only if I set it at the lowest thermostat. I'm happy, though, that my electric bill is lower than usual - so that's a plus. Is there any way to correct the noise?

Great - But Subject to Turbulent Air Flow

Submitted by Zed in NY - 9/3/2018

I bought this unit for my Master Bedroom. It was absolutely wonderful for the first three weeks - quiet, consistent with temperature, and the auto cycling was not at all bothersome while falling asleep. This was finally the Goldilocks solution for my bedroom and I was happy after returning two other brands. It looks great, is simple to use, and easy to clean the filter. However, the remote provided never worked and the lights on the front (which are bright at night) can™€™t be turned off, but neither were features that mattered to me.Three weeks after installation, the unit started producing ™€œcross wind™€ noise similar to what you hear in a car driving down a highway in a strong cross wind. It sounded like a strong wind from the outside - but it was a perfectly calm night. It sounded like paper tearing - a high frequency fluttering air noise which was even more noticeable when the fan was blowing without the compressor on. I received the ™€œit™€™s a normal noise™€ response on calling, but I™€™m certain no engineer at Frigidaire would find it normal. I determined it™€™s an issue with turbulent air flow created by the cross-flow fan - your hand can feel the uneven air flow as it exits into the air register. It took three small foam strips placed in the vent from the center to the right side to channel air flow. Not an ideal solution since the foam can possibly fall off and potentially get caught in the fan. The channels also cause slightly more low frequency noise (much more tolerable since it is basically white noise). However, I can finally sleep and the high frequency ™€œtearing™€ noise is gone. Overall, love the unit. Best I found for my needs - but annoyed at having to McGuyver a solution. This doesn™€™t appear to be a consistent issue based on reviews, but a few others have had the same problem. Their solution was to block an entire portion of the vent.

Noise Problem

Submitted by Wendy100 - 8/31/2018

I was looking for an AC unit with a very low noise rating, since it will be used in my bedroom not far from where I sleep. This unit had one of the lowest decibel noise ratings. After it was first installed I found it to be very quiet, but not consistently. As the compressor would engage it would be noticeably louder, but still relatively quiet when compared to my previous unit. These noise fluctuations are probably normal. However, within a week it started making another odd and annoying noise--a sort of vibrating/rattling, especially when first starting up. It has now been replaced with another unit of the same model which solved that problem. It is still a big improvement over the noisy unit I was using previously.

My Gallery AC 8000 Btu/hr

Submitted by Aitch - 8/24/2018

Purchased this online and was delivered Jul 21, 2018. The unit was installed and was functional by Aug 7.The AC cools the 200 Sq. ft bedroom in about 20 minutes and performs according to its features. The exception is the loud 'whoosing' sound lasting about 7 seconds whenever it operates from a dormant state-- this noise wakes me up -- I was told by customer support that this condition cannot be altered. There is likely to be a setting that skips this noise but I have not experimented yet.. such as 'cool' and a fixed fan speed.Overall, I am satisfied with this unit. It deserves 5 stars if the aforementioned noise can be fixed.

Decent AC

Submitted by Zyga1922 - 8/24/2018

Bought my AC about 3 months ago. Pretty satisfied. Nice design, all standard features. I like the indicator for a filter cleaning time. In order for this ac to work really quiet, you really need to install drain hose. If one is not installed then you get a lot of water splashing noise, which defeats the purpose of a quiet AC. Also I am waiting for a remote replacement as the original that came in the package had a manufacturer issues. Front panel was coming off, I wasn't able to glue it. Looks like FRIGIDAIRE has a wider issue with these, becasue they were not readily available and I have to wait two month for a replacement. Definitely recommend the product.

Exactly as advertised...until it broke.

Submitted by Possibly a happy cus - 8/20/2018

I bought this unit on July 6. It worked beautifully and exactly as advertised: extremely quiet and very efficient. It did a great job of cooling. Unfortunately, after about 2 1/2 weeks, the unit suddenly began making loud, intermittent scraping noises sounding as if the fan had come loose. I called PC Richards and they told me to return the unit and exchange it for a new one. I did this two days ago and so far, so good. PC Richards did not treat me courteously and gave me a hard time about not having the original packaging. I doubt I will ever buy another machine from PC Richards as a result. I certainly hope this machine does not go bad again since it is wonderfully quiet. I will say, however, that the LED lights on the controls are way, way too bright and Frigidaire needs to change them. I have had to put tape over the LEDs to dull them - otherwise they totally light up my bedroom and keep me awake.

Bought this and have loved it ever since. We don™€™t have AC and this keeps our master bedroom cool and we can sleep at night during heat waves. Inside it™€™s quiet, the compressor is loud but not that bad, it blows the cold air reall well. It™€™s not the easiest to install, took hubby 3 attempts, but we also have really old windows. I suggest buying a bracket for extra support. It was hard to get the angle to slope correctly, and we also live on a second story , so no one can stand outside to hold it. Quiet comes with a price

Submitted by p13rr0t - 8/12/2018

This is one of the window mounted acs available on the market. It's really quiet though packs enough power to cool down room really quickly. However it's quite expensive and it's the only disadvantage I could see.

Quiet and powerful

Submitted by Aaron G - 8/10/2018

I bought this AC as a compromise without knowing if there was any quality to the product. For an 8000BTU AC this is as quiet as I've heard aside from Freidrich models three times the price. Great value and I can sleep at night.

Quiet at first, but give it two weeks.

Submitted by jimburner82 - 8/8/2018

Purchased this unit specifically because it was supposed to be one of the quietest on the market. Once we removed the drain plug and let nearly one liter of water pour out of it, stopping a horrible whapping noise (that we were told was "typical operation"), it was quiet... for a few weeks. Then it started marking a weird whooshing noise- as if a strong wind was being blown past a broken window. Frigidaire was no help, again, it was "typical operation." Only after googling and reading through reviews did I learn that this is a common issue, and the only way to solve it is to cover the left 1/4 of the front vent with packing tape.Sorry, but that is not typical operation- that's a design flaw- especially on a unit marketed for being quiet. Skip this one.

Great cooling and fairly quiet!

Happy with both our 8000 and 6000 BTU units thus far. Fairly quiet I™€™m comparison to similar units we have tried. Both are in bedrooms and run at a level hum.

My Review for FGRQ0833U1

Exceeded my expectations; neede to upgrade old unit. Needed more power, more efficient, and quiet. Installation and specs were easy and straightforward. Only slight neg is the cover on the remote came unglued.

It is true!

The salesman told me it was the most quiet of all air conditioners out there. So true. Beautiful sleeping as you hardly hear it even when it is on high.

Most quiet A/C I ever had

Submitted by Dave11T - 7/29/2018

This is the most quiet and efficient a/c on the market. Easy to install and on economy mode comes back on when it should so room never gets warm. I recommend this to all. Two friends have bought it after hearing it run. I™€™m going to buy another one.
